Gond paintings derives its name from ‘Gond’ tribe of Central India, and is inspired by the folklores of this tribe. The Gond tribe, which is said to be one of the largest tribes in India have been carrier of this unique art for ages. The word ‘Gond’ comes from the Dravidian expression ‘Kond’ which means ‘green mountain’. Gond Art is almost a 1400 year old traditional art made by the Gond Tribes mainly found in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Jharkhand and, Maharashtra.The specialty of Gond art is that it is drawn by putting together colourful dots and lines to create a sense of motion. The paintings which majorly comprises of nature’s bliss, viz. animals, trees, birds and fishes, are made using symmetrical patterns and vibrant colours. If you carefully observe the Gond paintings, you will find that the symmetrical shapes comprise together to form a complete image. Initially, they use to paint using natural colors; yellow color from chui mitti (local sand), deep red from the tree, black color from charcoal and green was made from cow dung. Over the years, the Gond artists have developed their own devices to work with various contemporary mediums and materials.
